These were kind of the only super creative door decs I did this year. Unfortunately, I had a high influx of residents and was only at about half capacity (or less for most of the year) so while you’d think I’d be more able to get creative with my products, I honestly lost a lot of heart for it this last year.HOWEVER, These beauties were to use up some of this nasty corn-yellow paper we had in stacks behind our front desk. I made a stencil but would vary the tip of the pencils with every one and cut out individual ‘pencil leads’ so that it would look a bit more authentic (because, come on, there’s never a perfectly sharpened pencil, right?!).Colored with sharpies, colored pencils, and some really fine drawing markers to outline it.

When Residents get written up:

Attention Resident Assistants! Don’t recycle the butcher block paper used on bulletin boards or as posters for events! Reuse them as gift-wrap and bows.
Other ideas for reusing butcher paper: - You could also use them for book covers - Cut the blank parts off for future posters or bulletin boards- Cut up the letters to put on bulletin boards- Make envelopes out of them  - Use them to make flowers- Cut it into strips and roll it up to make: a wastebasket, a bowl, or any of the crafts at this website
Have fun and keep reducing, reusing, and recycling :)

This bulletin board was originally intended for March and the release of the Hunger Games. However, I got behind. So it was for April, instead!

Magazine cutouts that focused on issues with: sexualization, the business of beauty, plastic surgery, skin lightening/darkening (the lightest and darkest skin tones I found in the magazines), women as objects (missing: Kim Kardashian for her gold perfume, seen here).

With snippits from the article on Hellogiggles by Julia Gazdag called “Body Image is Still A Thing, Apparently”.

I didn’t have very many girls on my floor compared to my boys, but I still felt this was an important message to convey, and I wanted to have the pictures and titles do most of the work instead of statistics on eating disorders, depression, or body image.

January’s Door Decs: Snowglobes!

These are the ones I have left to finish, due to running out of my original puff paint. But they vary. Some have buttons, others bows, top hats, scarves…all with different colored puff paint. Then I wrapped them in plastic wrap with some glitter, so when you shake it, it’s like an actual snow globe!

To recreate:

  • Light blue paper
  • Blue marker
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic or puff paint (Multiple greens, white, black, and orange at minimum)
  • Plastic wrap
  • Glue stick
  • Glitter (white)

Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate door decs for November/December.
Individually cut out by hand from scrapbook paper and shaded, these puppies took me way too long. Sad thing is, I got so sick of coffee cups that I haven’t done them for my fellow RA’s yet.

Throughout first semester, I told my residents if they did not come to me within a week, I would facebook creep and find the most awkward photos to put up onto the bulletin board. Needless to say, that week went by and no one came to me to get their photo taken. It says “An awkward, crazy collection of people forced to live together for a year.…Needless to say, it will be entertaining.”
